Fire is both a blessing and a curse, a welcome source of warmth in winter and heat to cook food, but a scourge when out of control. My guess is that our distant – way distant – ancestors began to value fire when they discovered small roasted animals in the embers after a lightning strike lit the underbrush. Now we fear fire. We no longer cook food over an open fire (except for festive barbecues and camp-outs) and we keep fire extinguishers handy at home and work. How civilized! Nevertheless, fire is one of the universally acknowledged elements (Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and some add Metal) that make life on our planet possible. (sculpture carved in Black Walnut)
