Whirlwind

I carve hardwood logs into sculpture. Trees grow vertically, and I can’t carve what’s not there, so my sculpture is almost always vertical (or, occasionally, horizontal). But still, a log. “Whirlwind” is unique. The four branches that suggest the swirling, circling, deadly whirlwinds that terrorize the southern states annually were made possible when an old – very old - cherry tree was cut down. It had been grafted as a sappling with cuttings from the other stone fruits: plum, peach, and apricot. If you look closely, you can see the graft line both along the outer surface and inside the center. (Apples and pears can also be grafted together, but I haven’t gotten my hands on an apple/pear log yet.)
