Locked In

It began when I became fascinated by medical illustrations and charts. Those with heads with the brains exposed invited me to put “thoughts” in these people’s heads. I tried different thoughts to see if they “fit.” In the process these anonymous heads became individuals. I have done close to 60 of these heads, a number of which reflect a mind struggling with various challenges from dementia to PTSD to schizophrenia. These were among the images that moved me the most.
As an artist, my subject matter is the familiar: often the everyday objects and characters that we encounter. Whatever the medium, the objectives are similar. I seek to challenge my viewers to see phenomena anew.
